3rd International Summer School 2010

The 3rd International Summer School of the study courses "Library and Information Management" of Stuttgart Media University (Hochschule der Medien, HdM) was held from 3-8 May 2010 and 27-29 September 2010.

The Summer School offered six workshops, five of them in English language:

• ”Music in Digital Libraries and Archives” with Jürgen Diet (Bayrische Staatsbibliothek, Munich) and Silke Sewing (Deutsches Musikarchiv, Berlin)
• ”Media Literacy for the Information Professional” with Barbara Devilee and Esther Hammelburg (Hogeschool van Amsterdam)
• ”Strategic Management for Electronic Publishing: Scholarly Information in Today’s Electronic Environment” with Prof. Dr. John J. Regazzi (Long Island University, New York)
• ”Intercultural Encounters” with Prof. Dr. Frank Thissen (Stuttgart Media University)
• ”Introduction to Multimedia Systems” with Prof. Dr. Chang Yoong Choon (Multimedia University Malaysia)
• ”Management und Technik Digitaler Bibliotheken” with Prof. Markus Hennies and Prof. Sebastian Mundt (Stuttgart Media University)

A number of workshops were complemented by excursions, for example a guided tour of libraries in the area of Stuttgart, or a study trip to the digitization department of the reputable Heidelberg University Library. Most of the workshops also included an e-learning activity to prepare for and reflect the seminars.

More than 80 library and information science students and professionals from 18 countries (including Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, the Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Kenya, Lithuania, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Poland, Rumania, South Africa, Switzerland, and the United States) joined the International Summer School. Three library professionals from the Dominican Republic, Kenya, and South Africa were granted a partial scholarship by BI-International.

The Summer School Café and Summer School Get Together Parties provided plenty of opportunity for the participants and lecturers to socialize, to share ideas and learn more about each other’s different experiences and perspectives on library and information science and beyond.

Planning for the International Summer School 2011 has already started. Next year’s Summer School will be held in the last week of September (26 Sept – 01 Oct 2011). The preliminary programme and the online registration form will be available here in early 2011.
