History of the HdM

The HdM was founded on 1 September 2001 through the merger of the Fachhochschule Stuttgart – Hochschule fuer Bibliotheks- und Informationswesen (HBI) University of Applied Sciences and the Fachhochschule Stuttgart – Hochschule fuer Druck und Medien (HDM) University of Applied Sciences.

First founded 60 years ago as a training centre for public libraries in southern Germany, the HBI extended its range of subjects and tasks to become the largest educational establishment for library and information science in Germany.

The roots of the HDM as a training institute for printing and media go back as far as 1853 when the advanced commercial training school was set up in Stuttgart. The Higher Technical College for the Printing Trade, where it was possible to study printing technology full-time, was established 100 years later. In 1979 the then Technical College for Printing started training the first media engineers. This set the course for the extension of its range of studies.
