Knowledge of modern information technologies, for example the creation and use of databases and handling of library and media management systems and Internet resources, is indispensable in occupations in the field of information and is therefore also part of the course. Students also acquire basic skills in information design and learn how to create and use digital and virtual libraries. The course of studies also teaches business skills (for example management, marketing, personnel management and controlling), examines questions relating to media law and enables students to acquire knowledge of cultural management within the meaning of the communication and marketing of cultural programmes. Students can focus on their own key interests thanks to a large number of optional subjects in different study areas.

In addition to concentrating on public and/or scientific libraries, students can select an additional key topic in the fields of management, information technology, cultural communication or media.

The course of studies combines theory and practical work by means of projects in co-operation with libraries and information centres. Two short periods of practical training and a practical semester also enable students to gain an insight into future job areas.
