Printing and Media Technology, Bachelor

Program Overview:

Books, newspapers and magazines come to mind most often when people think about printed products. Everyone is familiar with such products. However, what is not well-known, is that these days digital production processes are used to create these products. Generally, the contents are not only used for the printed products, but additionally for web and CD-ROM solutions. Such cross-media productions are becoming increasingly important.

The Printing and Media Technology course of studies, is the only Bachelor program which encompasses all printing processes from a technical aspect as well as finishing and prepress technologies, and qualifies students for a high tech industry.

The core curriculum provides students with essential knowledge in the areas of natural sciences, technology and computer sciences at a challenging level. This is rounded-off by fundamentals in the areas of business management as well as design. The main curriculum offers a wide range of electives in the areas of technology, business management, publishing, media computer sciences and packaging which enable students to select subjects suited to their individual needs. Focal subject areas include printing process technologies, prepress, digital media productions or finishing operations.

During their studies, students can examine existent production chains starting from the idea to the finished product, via intensive project work. The technical premises at the university correspond to the latest state of the art technologies. Media servers, computer to plate (CTP), digital photography and digital printing are available along with laser imaging for flexographic printing, gravure engraving directly from postscript data and large format printing (LFP).

In an integrated co-op working term, future professionals in the area of printing and media technologies can gain experience at media service providers, pre-press studios, printing firms, manufacturers of printing machinery, major printing and publishing companies or in industrial and commercial enterprises. The co-op working term is often spent abroad.

Graduates of this program have a wide range of employment opportunities. In addition to book and newspaper publishers, there are a number of specialised fields of application, in which Printing and Media Technology graduates are much sought-after. Catalogues and e-commerce, the organisation and coordination of distributed digital workflows, the creation of advertisements, personalised digital printing or the packaging prepress area are just a few examples.

Due to their extensive training in the printing and media area, graduates of this course of studies have excellent career opportunities for management positions in medium-sized and large companies. A successful completion of this course of studies leads to a Bachelor degree. HIghly qualified graduates may further enhance and broaden the scope of their studies by subsequently completing the Master’s program.

Admission to the course of studies is restricted (numerus clausus). Prospective students may apply for a begin of undergraduate studies in either the winter or summer semester.
