The Change Of Image Capturing Formats In Motion Pictures

Survey / Press / FAQ / deutsch

Since 1997 digital technologies have found their way into shooting professional motion pictures. Starting with MiniDV Camcorder in the films of the Dogme95 group, a Star Wars sequel that was shot on High Definition, terms like D20, F23 and Red One are today known to everyone in the industry. But also the introduction of the Digital Intermediate in Postproduction up to the digital movie theatre projection, as it can meanwhile be found in bigger cities, have influenced the industry.

This enormous change of the technological workflow and therefore also the working conditions and the artistic possibilities have not yet been documented in a sophisticated way.
In face of the technological changes, traditional film formats remain in a strong position and so the significance of each format for motion picture productions in past and presence shall now be determined. The term image capturing format does not only stand for the size and aspect ratio of the image that is being projected into the camera, but also for the types of carrier material, signal processing and the camera itself including possible special accessories.

A worldwide survey, starting in March 2008 is addressed to Directors of Photography of motion pictures that had a theatrical release in Germany between 1997 and 2007.
In collaboration with the national cinematographer's societies and IMAGO - the European Federation of Cinematographers, the data will be collected mainly online.

Following this first survey, more detailed interviews with Directors of Photography that have shot with new formats will be realized.
The documentary film "From Dogma to Dogville - Don't try this at home", that has been shown on several filmfestivals like Camerimage, Manaki Brothers and Maridimagen, provides an insight to the topic and the kind of interviews planned.
