The Visual Media Lab Conference 2023

After a long absence, the first conference of Moving Images in five years took place in Stuttgart in early March: Visual Media Lab Conference (VMLC). For three days, the Stuttgart Media University (Hochschule der Medien) welcomed professionals and researchers from the film and TV industry to the first event of the new HdM-iInstitute VISUAL MEDIA LAB (VML). Also students and non-professionals took profit from the numerous presentations and discussions.

After a five-year break, at the beginning of March 2023, the time had come: The Visual Media Lab Conference was established as new umbrella for the already known HdM-labels „VeGa-Camp“ and „International Cinematography Days“ and was extended by the SMPTE-Students-Chapter Germany.
From March 8 to 10, the conference welcomed professional speakers from the fields of television and film production. Initiated by the professors Jan Adamczyk, Dr. Jan Fröhlich, and Stefan Grandinetti of the degree program Audiovisual Media (AM), the VMLC presented its international audience three exciting days of presentations on current developments and future trends in the production of film and TV.

Under the slogans Science and Technology, Virtual Production and Virtual Cinematography, each conference day was dedicated to a different aspect of current trends in the industry. Renowned speakers from various areas of the media industry – including representatives from the famous German broadcasters SWR and RTL – offered introductions and input on topics such as HDR (High Dynamic Range) and SDR (Standard Dynamic Range). A strong focus was also on the topic of virtual production and how the use of LED walls in film studios could change the current workflows. In addition to experts and researchers, the conference also provided a platform for student voices: Students’ presentations were an integral part of the program right from the start. In the so-called Student Talks, not only members of the HdM had their say, but students from RheinMain and Hamm-Lippstadt universities were able to share their experiences as well.

Among the highlights of the conference was the opening of a new, German Student Chapter of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) by Dr. Hans Hoffmann (European Broadcasting Union/SMPTE). The chapter is founded by three universities and offers students the opportunity to exchange ideas and network with like-minded people and professionals around the world. More highlights were case studies of highly topical of TV, film and commercial productions of leading speacialists of the field of visual effecs and cinematography.
The conference was brought to a fitting conclusion with a panel discussion on the final evening, featuring, among others, Jost Vacano (Professional Association of Cinematographers/American Society of Cinematographers), Director of Photography of the award-winning classic Das Boot (1981).

The next Visual Media Lab Conference will take place in about two years at Stuttgart Media University.
