This lecture provides in-depth knowledge on current codecs for multimedia data compression.
The categorization, functionality and features of the currently most relevant image-, video-, audio- and speech Codecs
constitute the center of this lecture. In order to provide the necessary theoretical background for understanding
these Codecs, first the fundamentals of information theory are discussed. After that, basic methods applied in the
compression and coding of data are summarized in a quite general view. In the main part the most important audio and
video codecs, such as
- JPEG and JPEG-2000
- MPEG family
- H.26x family
- AMR
will be studied in detail.
Organisation of the lecture:
In the first approx. 10 weeks the fundamentals as well as the JPEG- and the MPEG-familiy are introduced by the lecturer. The theory is
accompanied by exercises. Four the last approx. 3 weeks the students have to prepair a presentation on an audio- or speech-compression standard. The presentation is assesed and constitutes the grade. There is no exam!
