Organisation of the summer semester

Information of the Rectorate for students

Last Updated: 3.4.2020 – this site is being updated regularly

Please also take a look at our information page about the coronavirus: Information about the coronavirus.

The current situation is new and special for all of us. It raises many questions, some of which we can already answer, and in some cases we are still looking for solutions. It is important to us to find answers that are goal-oriented, in order to protect the health of all university members in the best possible way and at the same time - despite the current conditions - to enable you to pursue your studies as "normally" as possible. We try to find fair solutions to protect you from disadvantages. All indications are always subject to the proviso that the corona crisis does not prompt the responsible ministries and authorities to take other measures at short notice. Please take note of the Corona information provided on our homepage. The Deans of Studies will contact you on all important questions. Please check your HdM e-mails on a regular basis!

1. When do the lectures start?

Lectures will start on April 20, 2020, according to the decree of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.

2. Will the semester take place? If so, how?

The semester will take place. We are preparing for the fact that a large part of the courses will be offered via distance learning. We expect that we will be able to hold necessary attendance courses during the semester. We will announce how the examinations will take place. You will find all important information on this page.

3. Do I need any special software and/or knowledge for the virtual semester?

We will offer materials as before in the Moodle and Ilias systems and in the timetable system. We will be holding video conference-based courses based on Alfaview, Zoom and BigBlueButton. You do not need any special licenses for this. The handling of the systems is easy. The library holds a large number of virtual stocks for you. (https://www.hdm-stuttgart.de/bibliothek) Contact your Dean of Studies if you do not have a sufficient DSL connection from your location or if you have other problems to participate in Distance Learning. We will try to find solutions.

4. Will everything work without problems?

We can't promise that. The new situation will demand flexibility from all of us. In particular, it is not yet possible to estimate the load on the servers and networks when, in addition to the home office and virtual school, almost 100,000 students in Baden-Württemberg will be doing distance learning. But: But we see this positively. You and we will learn a lot. That is what we call studying! And: We will systematically reflect on this in order to do it better in the future - this is called science.

5. Will each lecture and seminar originally planned take place? In the same quality?

No. We will do everything we can to ensure that there are enough lectures and seminars available to ensure the success of your studies. The lecturers are preparing the virtual lectures with great commitment. But: We will only be able to offer some of the courses if attendance can be guaranteed during the semester - while taking all the necessary precautions. The direct line between lecturers and students, much of what constitutes our "DNA" as HdM, is also limited. It is a new situation for everyone. We ask for your understanding that this semester will be unusual.

6. Where can I find all important dates for the semester?

The updated schedule for the summer semester 2020 at the HdM can be found at: https://www.hdm-stuttgart.de/hinweise_zum_coronavirus/terminplan_aktualisiert.pdf (in german)
