Sustainability and climate protection at the HdM
We understand sustainability in the sense of the well-known definition of the Brundtland Report of 1987
"... meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
As a public institution, the HdM is therefore committed to its social and ethical responsibility, as we contribute significantly to the development of a more sustainable future through research and teaching. We have therefore set ourselves the task of improving the sustainable development of society and contributing to the achievement of the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals by training responsible young academics.
To achieve these goals, we have established various institutions at the HdM. The student sustainability initiative USCHI and the Sustainable Media Institute led by professors are actively involved in sustainability development at HdM with projects and events. Since 2023, we have been designated as the lead university for the Stuttgart cluster as part of the state's climate protection initiative and are therefore also home to a climate protection management team that advises and supports HdM and the other universities in sustainability and climate protection projects.

Climate protection manager
The state is hiring climate protection managers for universities at nine locations. Universities can and should play a pioneering role in achieving the goal of a greenhouse gas-neutral state administration by 2030.
In order to further strengthen climate protection at Baden-Württemberg's universities, climate protection managers are being hired at nine locations across the state. They will also act as an interface to the state building administration for all other universities in the state.

The HdM as a leading university in the Stuttgart cluster
The HdM is actively involved in the climate protection initiative of the state of Baden-Württemberg and has been the lead university of the Stuttgart cluster since 2022, making it one of the nine universities at which these new climate protection manager positions have been created. One of the main tasks of the Cluster Climate Protection Manager Stuttgart, in addition to the interface function, is to advise and support the HdM, the HfT, the HMDK and the ABK in sustainability and climate protection projects. The position of Cluster Climate Protection Manager will be permanently anchored at the HdM from 1 January 2023.
In addition to the state's nine climate protection managers, each university also has the opportunity to receive funding to develop an integrated energy and climate protection concept as part of the National Climate Protection Initiative. The funding provides for a project position limited to two years. We applied for this funding at an early stage and were able to fill the position on 1 March 2023.
