Beschreibung: The increasing availability of mobile and ubiquitous technologies such as mobile phones, tablets, video projectors and flying robots has lead to new and exciting ways how people can interact with their physical environment. Novel forms of interaction include gestures, embodiment, localization and distribution over virtual and real spaces. This technology-mediated setup allows to explore revolutionary ways how physical architecture and infrastructure of a place can be combined to create untried social experiences, fresh means of communication for people and novel advertising possibilities.

In this research orientated course students will be introduced to the field of interaction in public space with a specific focus on 'mobile interactive projections' that come often in form of installations along with the use of different interaction modes (e.g. gesture-based, tangible/touch-based).

This semester the focus is on interactive projection installations. We want to explore and create new ways on how interactive projections onto physical objects such as architecture and surroundings can create new social experiences, new means of communication and novel approaches in advertisement.

The aim is to generate new concepts or applications in the area of
  • interactive advertising
  • guerrilla marketing
  • types of entertainment-, augmented reality-, games
  • interactive art installations

  • Alternatively, the applications could involve the 'Displaydrone' which is a flying robot based interactive display that consists of an Octocopter with an attached pico-projector and a mobile phone. This system is available for test flights (Collaboration of HdM & iFR Stuttgart University) .

The course is divided into four phases:

    1. Exploration phase:
  • reading the latest research papers & giving short presentations

  • 2. Introduction to "User Centered Design process" and "Branded Interactions process"

    3. Concept development:
  • Idea sketching & working out new concepts

  • 4. Project documentation:
  • research paper abstract, video demo + abstract

  • Alternative:
    3A. App development:
  • Building an early, functional prototype (e.g. Android coding & content creation)

  • 3B. Experimental trials:
  • carrying out short tests & evaluations of the concepts with the flying Octocopter-system

  • Android or iPhone coding skill is not a must for this course but a valuable add-on. Concept designers and AV-content creators are needed, too.
