Application Step by Step

Step 1: Check requirements

As a first step, please check if you meet all requirements for applying for Social Media Marketing & Management

Step 2: Download and fill out the application form

The application form includes relevant personal information as well as guiding questions for your personal essay. Please write about your skills, experience, and ambitions. You should also provide reasons for choosing this course, information about any relevant previous experience, and your career plans. Please answer the questions truthfully.

Step 3: Submit your application form

When you have filled out your application form, please upload the form together with a document that shows that you will have finished school by August 2025. If you have already finished school, please upload your school leaving certificate. If you are still attending school, please provide your last report card that shows the grade you are attending. Before you upload the document, please check if you have provided a valid e-mail adress because otherwise we will not be able to contact you.

 

Please make sure that you name your documents in the following way:

Application form: last name_first name_application2025, e.g. smith_julia_application2025

School document: last name_first name_school2025, e.g. smith_julia_school2025

 

Application deadline: 30.6.2025

 

Please submit your documents only once. You will NOT receive a confirmation e-mail after uploading them, however there will be a message on the screen telling you which files were uploaded. If you do not see an error message, the upload was successful. Please ONLY upload your documents ONCE and ONLY upload the REQUIRED documents (application form, school document or recognition of school document by Konstanz).

 

The password required for uploading is "SMMPhase2".

Step 4: Take the English language test

After evaluating the submitted application documents, we invite the best candidates to the second selection round which consists of an English language test and an interview. If you are selected for the second round, you will get an invitation e-mail with information regarding the language test, as well as the day and time of your test session and interview. The language test and interview will be conducted online. You will need a computer, headphones, and a reliable internet connection. 


Step 5: Take part in the interview

All candidates with a B2 or higher English level may take part in the interview. The interview will give you a chance to get to know us and ask any questions about the program. In the interview we will focus on your motivation to study Social Media Marketing & Management and your personal background. The interview will take about 10-15 minutes and we will do it on Zoom.
In the invitation e-mail, you will receive relevant information regarding the day and time of your interview as well as the Zoom link.

After the interview you will receive a certificate stating the overall grade you have achieved in the entrance exam. The entrance exam counts 70 %, your final school leaving grade counts 30 %. 


Step 6: Apply

In 2025 there will be two entrance exams:

 

Entrance exam 1:
May 20, 2025 Deadline for uploading the application form (the upload button is further up on this page) 

For invited applicants only:
June 2, 2025 Online English test
June 5/6, 2025 Online interviews
June 10, 2025 Deadline for uploading all application documents (school leaving certificates and recognitions of certificates can be uploaded until July 15, 2025). Instructions for uploading your documents are provided below.

June 30, 2025 Deadline for uploading the application form (the upload button is further up on this page) 

For invited applicants only:
July 7, 2025 Online English Test
July 10/11, 2025 Online Interviews
July 15, 2025 Deadline for uploading all application documents. Instructions for uploading your documents are provided below.

 

International applicants from non-EU/EEA countries who do not have a German higher education entrance qualification need to apply for entrance exam 1. All other international applicants can apply for either entrance exam 1 or 2. However, as your school leaving certificates have to be recognized by the Studienkolleg Konstanz, we recommend applying for entrance exam 1.

 

 

There are five steps you need to follow to apply, after passing the entrance exam:

1. Register:

You need to register on two platforms:

 

Start by registering on hochschulstart.de. You will receive two important numbers:

  • BID (Applicant ID)

  • BAN (Authentication Number)
    You will need these later for your application.

 

Next, register on the HdM application portal.
If you're not currently an HdM student, use the link above.
If you're already an HdM student, log in via the student portal, then go to "My Applications" to begin.

 

2. Apply:

Apply via the HdM application portal.

After registering on both hochschulstart.de and the HdM portal, you can apply for a Bachelor's program.

  • You will need your BID and BAN from hochschulstart.de.

  • You may apply for up to three different Bachelor’s programs at HdM.

  • Exception: If applying for a second degree or a higher semester, you can apply for only one program.

Fill in all required information and upload the necessary documents through the portal. You need the certificate showing the results of the entrance exam as well as your school leaving certificate. If you have a foreign qualification, please check the requirements section.

 

3. Prioritize:

Set your application priorities on hochschulstart.de.

  • Rank your study programs from most to least preferred.

  • You can only receive one admission offer at a timeIf you receive multiple offers, only the one with the highest priority remains valid (lower-priority offers will expire).

  • It is essential that you rank our study program as your highest priority, otherwise it may be automatically withdrawn in favor of a higher-ranked choice. 

 

4. Wait for Admission Offer:

Monitor your status on hochschulstart.de.

After the application deadline, the university will review your documents. If you receive an admission offer, hochschulstart.de will notify you by email.

  • If you get multiple offers, only the one with the highest priority will be valid.

  • Check your status anytime on hochschulstart.de.

 

5. Enroll (and upload additional documents if required):

Complete your enrollment via the HdM application portal.

If you receive and accept an offer on hochschulstart.de:

  • You will get an official admission letter from HdM (also on hochschulstart.de).

  • This letter will provide instructions on how to finalize your enrollment (immatriculation).

  • Follow the instructions carefully and upload any additional required documents.
