The psychological effects of FOMO (Fear of missing out) and its connection to social media usage

What negative effects does FOMO have on the mental health and well- being of people who regularly use social media?

The following paper examines the phenomenon of Fear of Missing out and its negative psychological impacts in relation to Social Media use. Based on literature research and analysis of prior studies, the root causes of FOMO and it´s numerous symptoms are explained in detail to understand the dimensions and construct of FOMO. Furthermore ,the relationship between FOMO and Social Media is examined, as well as the negative psychological effects of FOMO in the context of Social Media use. The analysis is guided by the research question: ”What negative effects does FOMO have on the mental health and well-being of people who regularly use social media?” and four further sub-questions: 1. How can FOMO arise? 2. What negative effects does FOMO have on our mental health? 3. Is there a concrete connection between FOMO and social media use, with a focus on social networking sites? 4. Which coping strategies make it easier to deal with FOMO. An online survey was carried out to gather further insights about the correlation between the variables FOMO level, PSMU, Urge to use Social media, sense of self-esteem,

depression, stress and life satisfaction. The following hypothesis were formulated and investigated. H1: FOMO intensifies the urge to use social media.H2: FOMO leads to PSMU. H3: Individuals with lower self-esteem are more likely to experience FOMO. H4: FOMO intensifies depressive symptoms. H5: FOMO causes stress. H7: FOMO causes lower life satisfaction. H8: Intense social Media use increases FOMO. The results of the study demonstrated that there is a strong Effect of FOMO on the urge to use Social Media, as well as a moderate effect of FOMO on PSMU. Additionally, a strong effect of sense of self-esteem and FOMO and a strong effect of FOMO on depression. Furthermore, results proved a low effect of FOMO on stress and a moderate effect of FOMO on life satisfaction.
