Inbound Open Innovation

Die Zufriedenheit von Innovationsentscheidern mit Methoden zur Integration externer Ideengeber in den Innovationsprozess

The present thesis deals with the exploration of methods that integrate external ideas into the internal innovation process of companies and organizations (also called inbound open innovation). As examples of these methods, the following should be named: design thinking workshops, innovation contests, hackathons, and innovation labs. The application of the mentioned methods enjoys great popularity among decision makers of innovation activities. Even though measuring the success of these methods remains extremely difficult. In most cases, it is not clear if the execution of these methods will pay off financially and if it facilitates the generation fo market-ready innovations at all.

The overarching goal of the present work is to explore why these methods are used repeatedly and if the decision-makers' satisfaction plays a crucial role. To answer these questions, a literature review was conducted in the first instance. In a second step, a quantitative survey among 58 innovation decision makers was carried out.

One key finding is that the decision-makers' satisfaction affects the future use of the respective method. Furthermore, it can be noticed that quantitative indicators--like the number of generated ideas or turnover achieved--have no effect on the satisfaction with a method. The quality of ideas can be seen as an indicator of high satisfaction. Especially for design thinking workshops, it was discovered that the satisfaction with the method is higher when the use of it was experienced as emotionally positive.
