Asymmetric partnerships
The effect of individual competence in open innovation partnership formation with startups
Purpose – The existing literature on open innovation (OI) focuses mainly on
large enterprises and only a few on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),
leaving only a brief analysis of the use of OI for startups. This paper aims at
closing this gap and contributing to a better understanding of which skills startups
and especially their founders need in order to be selected by established
companies for OI partnerships. The partner formation process will be presented
and a competency model will be developed. Furthermore, the challenges and
advantages of OI for asymmetric partners will be demonstrated.
Design/methodology/approach – The research is explorative and aims at
theory-based practical indications. Quantitative methods are used for data
collection and analysis. The derived competence model will be tested for its
relevance in search of suitable startups for an OI partnership with established
companies. This is achieved by a conjoint experiment and a questionnaire
collecting additional data.
Findings – The paper presents the OI competence model for startup founders.
The research suggests that in particular innovation capability plays an important
role in the selection process of startups for OI partnerships. The developed
competence model is confirmed in the present paper and the significance of the
model is discussed.
Research limitations/implications – The most important limitations arise from
the specific research context, which focuses on partnerships in a non-equityrelated
co-creation relationship. Furthermore, the survey design restricts the
survey as only a limited number of competencies could be assessed by the
recipients without overwhelming the recipients.
Future studies should, therefore, consider applying an adaptive conjoint analysis
(ACA) to investigate a more complex model of competencies with a larger
sample.
