The Publishing degree programme: books – press – cross media Media Publishing is one of only three publishing degree programmes in Germany. The students investigate changes in behaviour in the use of media and are concerned, both in theory and in practice, with the conception, production and circulation of books, magazines and newspapers as printed, digital and mobile media. There is also an increasing focus on cross media networking.

Contents and Structure

Product development and design, market research and business models are the key focuses of the projects which are carried out regularly with publishing companies. To do this, students use the excellent technical equipment available at the University. Among other things, a Mac laboratory with the latest hard and software, a complete advertisement and editing system, as well as a modern eye-tracking system are part of the equipment. A further plus: the small number of students makes small learning groups possible; there is also close contact to the academic and other teaching staff, all of whom have experience of working in publishing. During the seven-semester degree programme, students acquire knowledge of management and production technology and topics concerned with content, design and marketing. In the main part of the degree programme, students can pursue their own interests by choosing electives. The teaching and research material is continually being updated by the academic staff to meet the changing demands of the publishing industry. Thus digital media are a firm part of the degree programme. From the third semester onwards the programme is strongly project-oriented and students and staff enjoy close contact with partners in publishing practice. The fifth semester is a practical semester: for 24 weeks, students work in a book or newspaper publishing company of their choice and gain insight into their future field of work. This can lead to valuable contacts, for example, when writing the Bachelor‘s thesis or when entering the job market.

Perspectives

The high practical relevance of the degree programme in Media Publishing is one reason why graduates have an excellent chance to enter the profession directly. They are sought-after young professionals in areas such as production, technical product management, (online) marketing, PR and (multi‐channel) sales, social media management and market research as well as legal rights and licences. Alternatively, graduates may enrol for the Master‘s degree programme Print & Publishing at Stuttgart Media University.

Admission

The degree programme starts in the winter and summer semester. Student places are limited. Applicants with previous training in a relevant profession, for example, in book selling, publishing and media, whether in trade or design, receive a bonus on their application grade. Personal interviews form an additional selection criterion.
