Media and people, data and information. The digital information flood is rising as is the demand for neutral, quality-assured information and professional expertise. All over the place data is recorded which allows for new applications, but also creates new problems. Those solutions cannot be of a technical nature only. At the same time, there is a desire to provide equal access to information ,information technology and media. Graduates of the degree programme "Information Sciences" accept these new challenges.

Contents and Structure

The first two semesters focus on basic skills and competencies. In the context of a project, students are introduced to scientific research and scholarly work. They acquire practical experience in information technology, web technology and programming. They learn about information markets, how to design innovative services and how information is structured and made retrievable.
Subsequently, students choose one of the two specialized areas "Data and information management" and "Library, cultural and education management" - Further topics covered are relevant aspects of society, e.g., the effects of digitization, preserving of cultural heritage or digital ethics. From the fourth semester onwards, students can develop their own professional profile based on a variety of elective courses.
During their internship semester, students change perspectives. They experience themselves and the vocational field in a completely different way and bring new impressions back to their studies. In the last two semesters, learning in projects takes center stage. Students work in interdisciplinary teams together with external partners in order to solve real problems.

Perspectives

According to the specialized area chosen, different fields of work and employers are available. Graduates of “Data and information management” mostly accept responsibilities in the areas of scientific information supply, research support, information literacy, metadata management, data processing and modeling, digitization, market intelligence, e-government, privacy protection and digital ethics. They are typically employed by academic libraries (e.g., university libraries or libraries of research institutions), other scientific service and infrastructure institutions like library networks or university computing centers, metropolitan libraries, corporate information centers, software service providers in the field of information, private providers of information services, local, regional and national administration, and all institutions working with data and information.

Graduates of "Library, cultural and education management" mostly accept responsibilities in the areas of information supply for schools, vocational training, professional work and leisure, and in the management of information and cultural institutions or education management. Characterizing tasks are the support of lifelong learning, the design of learning spaces, social and intercultural library work, provision of media literacy, reading promotion and the organizing of cultural events. Typical employers are public libraries (e.g., municipal and local libraries), media centers, state agencies for public libraries, libraries of universities of applied science, integrated municipal centers for education and culture, private cultural and educational institutions, and other service providers in the fields of culture and education.
