Short Term Programs and Summer Schools at HdM and Abroad

Studying abroad can be a life changing experience. However, for many different reasons, the possibility of spending one semester or more in a different country may not be available to everyone. Due to work or family committments or financial constraints, some students may not be able to have the classic study abroad experience. If this is the case for you, why not consider taking part in a short-term Study Abroad program or Summer School? These programs offer students the opportunity to experience everyday student life, attend seminars, focus on different subjects and gain new perspectives in a compact format lasting generally from two to ten weeks. During these courses, students can earn credits quickly in order to complete their program of studies sooner or leave more space in their study plan for electives. Not only will you gain new academic perspectives, but you will also have the chance to experience a new culture, meet new friends and brush up on your language skills.

Financing and Costs

Students usually have to finance Short Term Programs themselves. However, there are a number of tuition free programs available which means that you are exempt from course fees and only have to cover travel and room and board costs. Students at HdM can apply for funding provided by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Submissions of the "Antrag auf Landesmittel" are possible throughout the year. Please see further information here. Please note that the funding by "Landesmittel" cannot be guaranteed. The sum of approved funding depends on the length of the Short Term Program chosen and merely grants a subsidy to the mobility planned.

Individual foundations also offer scholarships for certain courses. A databank for grants can be found on mystipendium.de.

DAAD: GO EAST STIPENDIUM also offers an overview for programs in Eastern Europe.

Earning Credits (ECTS) Abroad

For a recognition of your study achievements abroad and to ensure the course(s) can be considered within your Major (Schwerpunkt), you will need to complete a Learning Agreement. Before you plan your attendance at a Short Term Program, we recommend that you meet with your Dean of Studies, bring all relavant course details with you, and complete a Learning Agreement Form. By doing so, you will determine in advance how the courses that you wish to attend at your chosen university could be recognised in your degree at HdM. If you have already completed your academic merits at your home institution and do not need to earn additional ECTS credits in a Short Term Program, you need not fill in the Learning Agreement mentioned above.
