Beschreibung: Abstract: Technology is shaping the way content is produced, distributed and consumed. Networks, algorithms and collective user behavior shift power, pose new questions about responsibility and sometimes generate unexpected effects. This module is to empower students to reflect and analyze challenges arising in this setting and develop a well-founded response to them. It is part of the Minor “Journalism and Communication Management” and taught in English.

Learning goals: You will learn to distinguish ethical aspects from factual questions. You will be able to discuss how ethical considerations can guide decisions and actions. You will gain experience in defining core concepts and analyzing the arguments for ethical positions.

Methods/exam: Based on an introduction into the aims and methodology of ethics, we will discuss prominent examples of ethical questions surrounding technological developments in digital media. Topics may include surveillance and data privacy issues, cybersecurity, psychological effects of social media, fake news and hate speech, and biases of artificial intelligence. You will choose your own real-world dilemma, analyze it and develop an ethical solution for it.
