By the students, for the students
Under the guidance of the Study Dean Professor Christof Seeger of HdM and the media services team of the Organising Committee, and with the financial support of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union, the stunning result is the U-Media Learning Hub.
"Through this collaboration with Erasmus+, our university can spotlight students' capabilities on the international stage and provide them with the opportunity to gain practical experience at a significant sporting event," Professor Christof Seeger said.
"I'm very happy about the results our students developed by working in interdisciplinary teams. Finally, we have realised a comprehensive learning hub which can inspire so many young sports media talents as they begin their careers."
Officially launched this month, the U-Media Learning Hub comprises ‘Essential' information on each of the 18 sports to be contested at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games.
Topics covered are competition format and rules, sports equipment and glossaries, and two other interactive areas: You be the Judge, where participants must view each sport through the eyes of the ‘referee'; and Hall of Fame, which highlights the standout performers at past FISU Games. Finally, there are practical tips and advice tailored to each of the three branches of the Organising Committee's pioneering Young Sports Media Talents Programme: reporting, photography, and commentating.
All of the content areas were created and developed by the students, who worked in teams of five to populate the platform for their allocated three or four sports in a series of two-week ‘sprints'.
"Working on this project for the FISU Games was an unforgettable experience - both exciting and challenging," Leijla Pipic, one of the HdM students, said. "We pushed ourselves and thought critically about media strategies while creating content for a global audience. We learned so much about sports media and teamwork, and we got a real taste of what it's like to cover a major international sports event. It was an opportunity we'll forever cherish."
