Beschreibung: |
This course introduces students to intercultural differences in general as well as specifically to
German culture and society. In the beginning, we'll explore theoretical approaches to looking at culture and cultural differences. We'll practice recognizing those in case studies and addressing common intercultural situations inboth university life and in the workplace. Doing so, students should reflect on their own cultural background. The better one understands their own values and needs, particularly relative to thecountry they live in, the more confidently, competently, and effectively they can act in anintercultural setting. Then, we'll look at recent historical events in Germany and how they affected German mentality and culture. This background will help us to identify values and trends in the topics we'll cover in the second half of the semester. They focus on cultural expression in Germany, such as via music, movies and the media landscape. One session will focus on current social and political issues such as immigration and climate change, and how they relate to culture. Students are required to give a short presentation and pass a final exam. Sessions/Contents: |
