Beschreibung: The course is made up of two sections. In the first section, the four will be on analysing numerous examples of both non-fiction and drama films, (including hybrid forms of docudrama) in terms of narrative shaping. The following techniques will be examined: A) The key lasting influence of epic storytelling and its well established conventions relating to plot structuring and performance rhetoric. B) Screenwriting techniques and how they have been adopted by documentary makers. C) How complex information has to be edited and processed before being successfully used in non-fiction moving image presentation. The second section will be focussed on the students presentations. These will involve creating a project file. The students will have the opportunity to research and shape either a documentary/non-fiction treatment, or the dramatisation of a true story. The course credits will be awarded after a live presentation of the project file towards the end of the semester. Background material will be provided during the course.

English Abstract: Narrative Shaping has now become a key strategy in non-fiction (documentary) moving image presentation. Attracting viewers across the board in televisual, cinematic, and on-line media is not only an economic necessity, but an urgent requirement for journalists an educators who are tasked with producing vital analytical and critical audio-visual narratives. This course explores the ways in which non-fiction moving image narratives have increasingly adopted well tried fictional shaping techniques to enhance their rhetorical impact.
