Beschreibung: The students get to know typical gravure production machines and their elements:
  • The gravure printing unit,
  • gravure inking
  • the characteristics of the ink
  • the characteristic curves that arise and have to be taken into account.
  • the necessary measuring technology
  • the elements of automation
  • the peripherals used
  • the overall integration of the presses into the building equipment technology

Typical printing effects and the evaluation of the prints are discussed.

The students are able to recognise the elements on the printing press, as well as to express themselves in a technical manner, to print under guidance and to use the measuring devices.

English Title: Gravure Printing
English Abstract:

Gravure printing or rotogravure is an intaglio printing process that uses rotary printing capable of producing continuous tone images.
Large copper plated steel cylinders are engraved with the chosen design using a laser or diamond tipped stylus. The engravings are referred to as ‘cells’ and are etched in differing depths, with deeper cells providing more intense the colour.

The course deals with the following details:
  • Understanding the materials used and ability to assign them.
  • Understanding the special demands of packaging and its workflows.
  • Ability to discriminate and judge printed material in terms of material parameters and colorimetry.
