Workload: Class time: 12 sessions, each 2 hours (24 hours total per semester).

Course Assessment: The course grade is based on the successful completion of various tasks designed to evaluate and enhance debating and discussion skills:
  • Debating (30%): Active participation in class debates.
  • Forum discussions (20%): Contributions to Moodle discussions, including voting, suggestions, and comments.
  • Final presentation with subsequent debate (50%): An individual or paired presentation followed by a debate with peers.
Important:
Regular attendance is mandatory: Students must attend at least 85% of the course sessions. Missing more than two classes (4 SWS) without an excuse may result in ineligibility to take the final examination.
Active participation is essential to the learning process. Students are expected to contribute actively to peer and group work, class discussions, and other course activities. Verbal skills will be evaluated as part of the overall assessment.

  • Achieved at least a C1 level on the Oxford Placement Test.

    Beschreibung: Have you ever had difficulties giving an argument in English? In any language, constructing and presenting a convincing argument is a challenging yet vital skill. If you answered “yes” to this question, then this course is for you.
    This course introduces students to the art of debating and provides a platform to develop critical thinking, persuasive communication, and structured argumentation. Through engaging, interactive group debates on diverse topics, participants will refine their speaking and listening skills while learning to analyze opposing viewpoints effectively.
    Topics may include:
  • Social issues such as education reform, climate change, and gender equality.
  • Technology debates, such as the impact of artificial intelligence or the role of social media in society.
  • Ethical dilemmas, including animal testing, capital punishment, and privacy rights.
  • Global affairs, like immigration policies, international aid, and cultural preservation.


  • To complement in-class activities, discussion forums on Moodle will enable students to engage in written debates, fostering additional opportunities to articulate ideas and explore contrasting opinions.

    This course is ideal for students looking to strengthen their argumentation abilities and gain confidence in participating in discussions and debates in English.
